Details on Sessions and Guest Speakers
Carmine Starnino was hired in 2008 to join an editorial team tasked with revamping Reader's Digest.
The goal was to publish bolder, more controversial, more relevant stories that preserved the magazine's hard-won relationship of trust with its millions of readers—while also winning new ones.
In his keynote, and in greater depth in his session, Starnino will speak to the challenges of trying to break new ground in the largest-circulation magazine in the country, and one of the biggest brands in the magazine world. A founding editor of the award-winning Montreal quarterly, Maisonneuve, Starnino was a finalist for 2011 Editor of the Year Award.
James Patterson has embraced the opportunity and potential at small magazines like Geez, Canadian Dimension and Border Crossings where he has served in a number of publishing and circulation-related positions.
James will be speaking on Small Magazine Financial Management: an understanding of different structural models of magazines and how it impacts decisions in relation to different financial and circulation models. How understanding those models creates unique opportunities to reach and grow audiences and address financial situations by creating new sources of revenue. How cashflow plays into the short, medium and long-term planning of small magazines. What digital means for new sources
of revenue for small magazines and some perils that lie within it.
Paul Crosby is the Director of Partnerships & Marketing for Out On Screen, producers of the Vancouver Queer Film Festival and Out in Schools, an award winning youth anti-bullying program. He is responsible for the overall management of the organization’s sponsorship and marketing programs. Paul has a Bachelor's degree in Recreation and Sports Studies from the University of New Brunswick, and is a member of AFP Vancouver's Professional Development Committee.
Paul will be participating in our "Ask The Experts" panel. His forte is relationship building and finding and keeping corporate sponsors.
Bob Mercer is a self-described editor/designer/theorist. He has been editor of The Georgia Straight, Calgary and Vancouver magazines; design editor of The Province daily newspaper; editor/art director of the Visitor’s Choice group of hospitality guides published by BIV Media Group; and publisher/editor/art director of VLM and myvancouver magazines. He consults to publishers and since 1994 has taught magazine publishing in the Simon Fraser University School of Communication. Bob also is a self-described song-and-dance man, singer and primary songwriter in the rock and blues band The Masses.
Firewall or free-for-all: how editorial and advertising can work together
All commercial magazines and many not-for profits have two audiences: readers and advertisers. The key is to identify both, to know where their interests conflict, and to define and occupy the place where their interests meet.
All magazines, but small magazines particularly, are challenged to maintain editorial integrity in an advertising marketplace that insists on added value. How is an editor to resist the pressure to play for pay? How can ad sales win clients to a magazine that appears deaf to their marketing needs? How is a publisher to keep this inherent conflict out of the office and instead build a cohesive ad/edit team?
Attend Bob Mercer's presentation for context, case studies, tips and tricks and discussion.
Elizabeth Rains is the Editorial Director for Pacific Rim Magazine, and an editing instructor with 25 years' experience, including work at Canada Wide Media, The Capilano Review, and the Vancouver Sun.
Be a Mix Master: How to develop your initial editorial mix or how to change the one you have to please your readers.
New magazines begin with an editorial concept, but implementing that concept can be like baking a cake without a recipe. The process is even more daunting when faced with the challenge of a re-launch. Elizabeth Rains will show you how to
create an editorial mix that supports your brand while satisfying readers and
advertisers.
Martin Wong,
Chief Marketing Officer, Smartt (www.marketingsmartt.com) With a decade of industry experience in Internet marketing, Martin Wong knows exactly how to drive traffic to a website and how to get new visitors to take action once they are there. Prior to joining Smartt, Martin managed his own successful Internet marketing firm for seven years. He frequently speaks at local business meetings on Internet marketing and content development. He has also been featured in numerous publications, including as a cover story in MakeItBusiness, a leading publication for small businesses in Vancouver.
Social and Search: How Social Media is Impacting Search Social media and search are quickly converging. User generated content has changed the way consumers search for information online. Recognizing this development, search engines are admittedly factoring user-generated content weightings into search algorithms to return relevant, popular links. In this session, Martin will show you how Search and Social come together to attract relevant visitors and keep your brands connected 24/7.
Jane Edwards Griffin, CGD, is the principal of Griffin Design specializing in corporate visual communications and magazine art direction. She has been happily consumed by print design for over 25 years. The Art of Direction: Picture This.
In our imploding sphere of communications, art direction is becoming more
relevant to more people. What is the role of the editorial art director? Is
there a formula for translating the written word to visual presentation? No,
there is not "an app for that". Jane Edwards Griffin will discuss process, and the must-have
attributes of a successful AD and share how stories are told to an audience
that enters the narrative often first with their eyes.

Steve Ceron, President, Board of Directors, MagsBC, and Owner, Think Green Publishing.
